4 Reasons why you should not take Exhaustion likely

Exhaustion: Causes & Effects

Heard of how people slump and die in recent times? It may just be a result of prolonged and extreme exhaustion.

Exhaustion, also known as burnout, is a state of extreme physical, mental and emotional fatigue or tiredness usually caused by prolonged exposure to stressful situations.

It is a common problem affecting people from all walks of life, in today’s fast-paced world. Professionals, students, caregivers, parents, and even medical practitioners alike.

Forbes.com, citing the McKinsey research, reveals 25% of GenZ, 13% of Millenials, 13% of Gen Xs and 8% of Baby Boomers reported feeling emotionally distressed with low levels of emotional and social well-being.

Causes of exhaustion

Different things cause exhaustion in human health. Some are highlighted below.

Personal stress – stress could come from your inability to meet a personal need such as financial issues, health issues, or relationship concerns. Thinking about these things can make you burn out

Work-related stress: Long working hours, high-pressure deadlines, and demanding job responsibilities can lead to burnout. This is particularly true for people in professions that involve high levels of emotional labor, such as healthcare professionals/workers, customer care representatives, support services, and teachers.

Lifestyle factors: poor diet, lack of balanced diet, lack of exercise, and inadequate sleep can also cause exhaustion

The absence of a support system can also make it challenging to cope with stress and can lead to burnout.

Exhaustion has its attendant consequences ranging from physical health problems to emotional and mental health issues.

Physically, an exhausted person will begin to experience headaches, weakened immune systems, digestive problems, chronic pains, and increased risk of heart diseases which may lead to stroke and if not attended to, may cause eventual death.

Exhaustion can also lead to relationship issues. It affects the quality of the relationship you have with loved ones. These issues include but are not limited to lack of intimacy, poor communication, negativity, and increased conflict.

Anxiety, depression, and insomnia are some of the effects of exhaustion on mental state. Burnout can also lead to a feeling of detachment from the world around you and a loss of interest in activities that were once pleasurable.

When exhaustion happens, it affects your cognitive function. You may begin to find it difficult to concentrate and assimilate. It also impacts your decision-making ability negatively. When this happens, there’ll be a decrease in your work performance, a reduction in productivity, and a higher risk of making mistakes.

The effects of exhaustion on human health cannot be overemphasized. It is expedient to identify and address the underlying causes of exhaustion and to take steps to manage stress and promote your overall well-being. Your body almost often communicates with you. Always take a listen. When it says ‘it’s time I get some rest’ please oblige it. Seek support from family and friends or a mental health expert, engage in regular physical exercise, and practice relaxation techniques like meditation.
