Living with haemorrhoids: what can I do to ease my symptoms at home?

Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are a common condition that affects many individuals worldwide. Characterized by swollen blood vessels in the rectal or anal area, hemorrhoids can cause discomfort, pain, and itching. Depending on the severity of the condition, many people are too embarrassed to seek “external” help and often resolve to home remedies.

In this article, we explore some simple and trusted home remedies that bring relief as well as promote healing.

Sitz bath: This involves soaking the anal region in a tub of warm water for 10 to 20 minutes to reduce itching and irritation. Epsom salts or baking soda can be added to reduce inflammation.

Increase fibre intake: One of the leading causes of haemorrhoids is constipation, which places strain on the rectal area during bowel movements. Taking fibre-rich foods draws water into stool and makes it easier to pass, helping to reduce haemorrhoid bleeding and inflammation.

Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help maintain hydration and promote smoother bowel movements. Taking up to 1.5 to 2 litres or about 6 to 8 cups a  day can help produce regular, soft stools and reduce straining.

Ice application: Ice packs can relieve inflammation and pain temporarily but should never be used for longer than 15 to 20 minutes; anything longer can lead to frostbite. Be sure to avoid direct contact with the ice to prevent skin damage and use a thin cloth as a protective barrier.

Aloe vera gel, vitamin E oil, and coconut oil: These natural remedies are applied topically to the skin and can help alleviate symptoms, soothe and shrink minor haemorrhoids.

Proper Hygiene: Maintaining good hygiene is essential for managing hemorrhoids and preventing infection. After each bowel movement, clean the anal area gently with unscented, alcohol-free baby wipes or moistened toilet paper. Avoid using dry or harsh toilet paper, as it can aggravate the sensitive skin. Pat the area dry with a soft towel or use a hairdryer on a cool setting. Excessive rubbing can worsen symptoms, so be gentle.

Stay active: Although one might not feel up to their usual workout, taking a brisk walk or incorporating gentle movement with stretching or yoga has proved helpful. Make it a point to break up long periods of sitting or standing, too, as both can increase pressure on the veins and irritate hemorrhoids.
