Self-care for Parents: How to Take Care of Yourself, While Taking Care of Others

I was reading somewhere that people don’t appreciate the responsibilities of parents often until they become one. Parents are doing great jobs taking care of their children, which can be emotionally, physically, and mentally draining that they don’t remember to care for themselves. But self-care is essential for parents. When you take care of yourself, you are better able to care for your children and also more likely to be patient, present, and engaged.

Try out these tips to get into the habit of caring for yourself when you are also responsible for caring for others:

    1. Make time for yourself every day: Even if it’s just for 15 minutes, take some time each day to do something you enjoy. This could be reading, taking a bath, going for a walk, or listening to music.
    2. Take breaks when needed: If you feel overwhelmed, take a break. Go for a walk, take a nap, or do something else to help you relax.
    3. Build Relationships: Stay connected with your friends, family, colleagues, and support systems. This could include pairing something you do daily with outreach to a friend, like while the coffee is brewing, or send a quick “hello” message to a fellow parent.
  • Get enough Sleep and eat healthy:  Eating nutritious foods gives you the energy you need to get through the day, and When you’re well-rested, you’re better able to cope with stress and make good decisions.
    1. Find a support group/Join a Community: Talking to other parents who understand what you’re going through can be a great way to get support and feel less alone or be a member of a community of parents with which you can engage.
    2. Be Grateful: Pause each day to note the good, give gratitude, and experience joy. Even if you have to utter things like, “I’m grateful that my child/teen did not throw a tantrum today,” or “I’m thankful for the sidewalks in my neighbourhood that allow me to safely go for my daily walk.”  that is enough.
  • Take RIDA TEAS: Teas that contain calming ingredients, which are often found in plants and herbs, are beneficial and help improve mood and relax your mind. These ingredients are often found in EUCALYPTUS and ARTEMESIA leaves, RIDA TEAS (Eucalyptus Tea & Artemisia Tea) are your best bet to help relax your mind and calm your body after a long day with children. In conclusion, self-care and self-love are not just for young adults or singles; it is meant for everyone, including parents. Self-care is an ongoing journey. There will be days when you feel like you are doing great and days when you feel like you’re falling behind. The important thing is to keep trying. Even small steps can make a big difference. So, if you’re a parent struggling to take care of yourself, know that you’re not alone. Follow these tips consistently and religiously, and watch yourself become the best parent you can be.
